Dandruff is a common skin condition characterised by dry, flaky skin on your scalp. It can also affect other areas of your body, such as the ears, nose, eyebrows and beard. Dandruff can be very itchy and white flakes of skin come off, sticking to the hair shaft and brushing onto the shoulders. The discomfort is on many levels. However, there are several hair products and preventative measures that can help keep dandruff under control. Find out how to deal with dandruff.

use professional products

There are several over-the-counter dandruff shampoos. These contain ingredients that act by softening the skin cells on your scalp, slowing down the production of skin cells and killing the fungi that cause dandruff.  Always read the instructions on the label and consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Alternate between brands if one loses its effectiveness. If the problem perseveres, consult your doctor.

try home remedies

You can also try one of several home remedies. You can soften skill cells by using natural oils to moisturise your scalp. Massage warmed coconut oil, almond oil or olive oil into your scalp, wrap in a towel, keep overnight and rinse in the morning. Slow down the production of skin cells by dandruff-causing fungi by adjusting the pH of your scalp. You can try rubbing bicarbonate of soda or crushed aspirin onto your scalp or rinsing with one part apple cider vinegar to one part water. Afterwards, always make sure you rinse copiously with water.

prevent dandruff

Once you have beaten dandruff, how do you stop it from developing again? Keep your hair clean. Avoid styling products, such as hairspray, gel, mousse and wax, to avoid build-up and allow your scalp to breathe. Spend more time outside enjoying the sunlight and fresh air. Add more zinc and B vitamins to your diet. Relax! – Stress is a major cause of dandruff.
